Put on your gloves and your gumboots this weekend and give your favourite beach one last polish to get it ready for winter as part of the Great Canadian Shore Line Cleanup.
“This s a national conservation measure that started with the Vancouver Aquarium and the World Wildlife Foundation. It’s a massive cleanup all across the country of all the shore lines,” said Annette Cake, regional co-ordinator for the World Wildlife foundation.
This year, local school students were asked to pick up litter on all the St. Albert waterways including the Sturgeon River, Lacombe Lake Park and Grandin Pond.
“We challenged the schools in St. Albert to take on that chore,” said Cake, who explained that as of press time, she did not know whether the schools would take on the challenge in this community.
The World Wildlife Fund will host the Great Canadian Shore Line Cleanup in Edmonton’s Emily Murphy Park on Saturday, Sept. 17, beginning at 10 a.m.
Participants are invited to sign in first at www.shorelinecleanup.ca and they are asked, if possible, to bring their own gloves.
“You don’t have to pre-register, but it helps us because we are planning to have lunch. We will have gloves, but if you bring your own, that helps to prevent waste. The main thing is please come and make a big difference to the health of the Saskatchewan River,” she said.
Cake hopes people will take the campaign to heart and clean up their favourite shoreline, wherever they are.
“Pick a chunk of shoreline and clean it up,” she said.
