The Seniors Association of Greater Edmonton (SAGE) is once again looking for the best and brightest seniors.

On Monday the organization put out a call for nominations for its fifth annual SAGE Awards. The program is their way of recognizing and celebrating those seniors who have contributed their time and talents later in their lives to make the community a better place for everybody.

The non-profit seniors’ organization has a mandate to improve the quality of life for seniors and their families in the Capital region through a wide range of programs and services. It is much life the St. Albert Senior Citizens’ Club but it covers a wider area. With more than 40 years of operations, it is considered to be a major provider of innovative seniors’ services in the region. While many of its members come from St. Albert, there haven’t been any award winners from this city. That’s something that the organization hopes to change.

David Loper, SAGE’s communications co-ordinator, said that it’s just a matter of word of mouth.

“It’s just getting more known and more widely accepted. We certainly see ourselves as relating to the greater Edmonton area.”

Nominations are requested for people who excel in arts and culture; business and entrepreneurship; community building; education; environment; health and wellness; public service; science and technology; social justice and peace and sport and leisure. Last year there were about 30 nominees for all categories combined.

Nomination entries will be accepted until January 15, 2011. Entry forms can be obtained at the SAGE office at 15 Sir Winston Churchill Square in Edmonton, on its website, and from local Servus Credit Union locations. For more information, call 780-701-9009 or visit www.mysage.ca.

The awards luncheon will take place in April 2011. Proceeds raised during the celebration will go to help fund essential programs such as the SAGE Seniors Safe House for seniors experiencing abuse.
