Morinville RCMP pulled over a driver travelling an incredible 80 kilometres over the limit last week.

An officer caught the extremely lead-footed driver on Highway 2 headed southbound at Township Road 572.

The 19-year-old Edmonton man was pulled over on July 19 in a Chevrolet pick-up truck without incident after an officer spotted him driving by in a flash.

Const. Yelena Avoine with the Morinville RCMP said officers see lots of speeding on local highways. She said this speed is excessive, but not as rare as it should be.

She said the detachment has received reports of high speeds before, but in some cases officers have not been able to catch up with the offender.

“That is why we are telling the public if they see an erratic driver to call us right away, so we can catch up with them or intercept them.”

Avoine said when the snow starts to melt in April and weather improves, speedometers all over the highways start to creep up.

The 19-year-old man will have to make a court appearance on Sept. 14. Unlike other tickets, because of the high speed he will not have the option of paying the ticket without appearing before a judge.

Avoine said if he were to be convicted there is no standard fine for this speed. It would depend entirely on the person’s record and other factors.

“It is up to the judge.”
