A Francophone father of two says he’s more eager than ever to promote Catholic education in St. Albert as he seeks a fourth term as school trustee.

Greater St. Albert Catholic trustee René Tremblay filed his nomination papers to run for re-election this fall in Ward 1 (St. Albert) on Aug. 22. Tremblay took office in a by-election in 2015 and has been on the GSACRD board ever since.

Tremblay said he has watched his two daughters grow up to become amazing, faith-filled people in GSACRD schools and felt every child should have those same opportunities.

“After 10 years, I’m more determined than ever to ensure the gift of publicly funded Catholic education is a choice for everyone,” he said.

Tremblay said he hoped to continue the board’s good works if re-elected. The board has reinforced faith education in its schools, which continues to be some of the best in Alberta when it comes to the arts, academics, and athletics. He and other board members have bolstered enrolment and school utilization rates, and established a French Immersion campus — one he looked forward to seeing flourish.

A Francophone who grew up in Morinville, Tremblay said he’s always been an advocate for French-language education in Alberta. He said knowledge of a second language gives students a leg-up to the world stage, and was something everyone should be able to pursue.

Tremblay is a 21-year resident of St. Albert, a volunteer with the Knights of Columbus, and a longtime member of St. Albert Catholic Parish. If re-elected, he said he would work to ensure the division excelled at faith formation, academics, and the arts, and remained a safe and caring place for all students, family, and staff.

Tremblay is one of the four declared candidates running for GSACRD trustee in Ward 1 as of Aug. 26. Voters will elect five candidates to the board this fall. Visit www.gsacrd.ab.ca/trustees/2025-trustee-election-information-for-candidates for more on the candidates.
