Province closes 195 Avenue until Nov. 1

Sturgeon County drivers have one less way to get around, as 195 Avenue is now closed until the end of the month.

The road was closed between 127 Street and 97 Street/Highway 28 yesterday and will remain that way until Nov. 1.

The closure is necessary so workers can complete work where 195 Avenue and Highway 28 now meet, said Alison Burns, a spokesperson for Alberta Transportation.

Closing the road was always part of the plan for the project and is unavoidable, she said.

As part of the Anthony Henday project, 195 Avenue is being realigned onto a flyover bridge over top of 97 Street. When the new road is completed, drivers will no longer be able to access 97 Street from 195 Avenue.

That access closure raised concerns in Namao when the project was first announced, but Alberta Transportation insisted they could not have another intersection so close to the freeway exit ramps without creating safety problems.

Sturgeon County has spent approximately $10 million, with the majority of the funding coming from the provincial and federal governments, to upgrade 195 Avenue.
