Police still investigating car-semi collision

RCMP are still investigating a collision between a semi-trailer and a car that sent two people to hospital with serious injuries earlier this month.

St. Albert resident Michael Ward, 27, and his girlfriend, 26-year-old Becky Greenwood, were northbound on St. Albert Trail, turning left onto Gervais Road when they were hit by the southbound semi at around 2:45 p.m. on Sunday, March 18.

“We got T-boned. He hit right on our passenger side,” Ward said. “We got pushed back across the four lanes … and hit the traffic light pole and bounced off that and back on the road.”

St. Albert RCMP Cpl. Laurel Kading said the investigation is ongoing and no charges have been laid to date. She said there is no timeline on when the investigation will be concluded.

“I know there’s a number of factors (investigators) are having to look into,” she said. “It’s probably more complicated than your typical (collision).”

Ward and Greenwood were extracted from their vehicle using the Jaws of Life and each suffered cuts, bruises and cracked ribs. Greenwood spent several days in hospital recovering from a cracked pelvis, bruised liver and a hemothorax, a build up of blood in the lung cavity.

“It’s a blessing they weren’t killed,” said Ward’s mother, Jayne Wourms.

The 46-year-old semi driver from Wetaskiwin was not injured in the collision.

Ward said the semi driver was at fault, but Kading could not confirm statements that the driver went through a red light with an unsecure load since the circumstances are still under investigation.

“What people believe they know happened, we have to determine as evidence, so we can’t release that until we know,” she said. “Sometimes you get to a collision and it looks fairly obvious what happened, but we have to confirm things before we can put anything out there because sometimes there’s factors present that people aren’t aware of and people make assumptions.”

Kading said road and weather conditions are not believed to be factors in the collision.

Ward’s mother, Jayne Wourms, said she hopes the semi driver is charged.
