A local organization is looking for five inspirational women.
Dedicated to encouraging advocacy for women’s advancement, the St. Albert Baha’i is once again planning to spotlight the area’s most influential and motivating women at its 18th annual International Women’s Day Ceremony on Saturday, March 8.
The organization has just announced a call for nominations and is asking the public to bring attention to the special works of family, friends and neighbours.
“We want to showcase five women who are inspirational. We find that by cheering on these women and by listening to the keynote speaker at the celebration, people also become inspired to go out and do something,” said Baha’i committee spokesperson Elaine Tahririha.
The event is a local recognition of United Women’s International Women’s Day, a global movement that celebrates the achievements of women. The theme for 2014 is Inspiring Change.
The 2013 recipients were Jenny Bocock, protector of the environment; Velvet Martin, advocate for children with disabilities; Lynn Rosychuk, champion for the vulnerable in violent situations; Sarah Hall, supporter of mothers and community life, and Katie Fitzgerald, youth activist and volunteer.
“There are so many qualities that make a person memorable. The ability to love. The ability to work for a cause. Dedication, perseverance, kindness, vision, helpfulness, creativity and courage,” Tahririha said.
“The common thread among most recipients is passion and humbleness. It’s the passion that drives them whether it’s passion for disabled children or creating a business that makes a difference. The energy comes from the passion. And I’m always touched by their humbleness.”
The organizing committee is searching for remarkable women living in St. Albert, Morinville and Sturgeon County. Suggested categories to consider are motherhood, aboriginal initiatives, science, arts, business, community service, health, literacy, mentorship, peace and youth.
Organizers request that nominators explain how nominee contributions enhance the community.
Nomination deadline is Saturday, Feb. 8.
