Theatre Yes has once more introduced The Doorstep Plays, an experimental form of outdoor theatre that families can book for their backyard gatherings.
The Doorstep Plays is a collection of three new short plays written by emerging playwrights and performed by the region’s rising stars. Each 20-minute play running back-to-back is designed to be performed in the intimacy of a backyard.
“It’s a very innovative form of theatre and The Doorstep Plays are unlike anything you’ve ever seen. It’s a version of travelling players. The plays are wonderful, compact and fast-paced new works that we bring right to your door. It’s a new kind of accessibility,” said St. Albert actor/singer Sophie May Healey.
Directed by Brett Dahl, the hour-long show features Healey, Julia van Dam and Meegan Sweet as the all-star female cast. Every performance includes playwright Mhairi Berg’s Caw Caw, Autumn Strom’s Squirm and Sebastian Ley’s War.
Berg’s Caw Caw is a revenge play whereby three women go on a camping trip and discuss how to make a man they all know pay for his past indiscretions.
“They want to show the consequences of his actions. It’s crazy and it’s very funny too. It gets into truthful moments and off-the-wall moments,” Healey said.
Strom’s Squirm introduces two women who were once in a romantic relationship but have since gone their separate ways.
“They reconnect over a garden and the garden tends to be meaningful to them by the end of the play.”
Ley’s War takes the battlefield to a homeowners’ association meeting.
“They have a yard party to go over rules and make sure everyone is following the rules. This play leads into the absurd and comedic.”
In trademark fashion, the shows are suitable for ages 14 plus. However, the size of the viewing audience is only limited by the backyard size.
“This is a perfect add-on to garden parties and barbecues with friends that can enjoy the show. We already have some bookings and people are excited about bringing friends and family over. It’s a cool way to enjoy theatre and start the summer.”
