A 19-year-old Edmontonian is facing 16 charges after being arrested in the early morning hours of April 25 in St. Albert's Deer Ridge neighbourhood, where he was reportedly found sleeping in a stolen vehicle and in possession of stolen credit, debit, and identification cards.

According to an April 26 news release, St. Albert RCMP say Jesse Berg was found asleep in a silver Honda Accord at about 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning by an officer on patrol. The vehicle, the release says, was stolen from a local fast food establishment three days prior.

“The (RCMP officer) approached the vehicle and performed a police check on the license plate, which did not match the Honda Accord, and was reported stolen,” the release states. “The officer asked the male to step out of the vehicle. When the male exited the Accord, the (officer) recognized him as the same individual who was responsible for the vehicle theft from the restaurant, which was recorded on video surveillance.”

“The male exited the vehicle and took off running into Deer Ridge Park. The officer pursued the male on foot to Muriel Martin School, where the male gave up and was taken into custody without further incident.”

In the vehicle officers found “numerous” debit, credit, and identification cards, all of which were not in Berg's name, RCMP say.

Berg is facing four counts of possession of a forged document; three counts of possession of property obtained by crime; one theft of motor vehicle charge; an obstruction charge; and seven counts of possession of stolen credit and debit cards.

Berg was released from custody with conditions after an initial hearing, and is scheduled to appear in court in St. Albert on May 29.
