Another local postal carrier is facing charges of mail theft.
Nisar Fatima Rizvi was scheduled to make her first appearance on Monday at the St. Albert courthouse, but sent instructions through a lawyer asking the case be postponed until Sept. 12.
Rizvi is charged with theft from mail and possession of undelivered mail.
St. Albert RCMP Const. Janice Schoepp said the detachment was called into help on July 28, after Canada Post completed a thorough investigation.
“We were dispatched to help a Canadian postal inspector,” she said.
Teresa Williams, a spokesperson for Canada Post, had few details to offer about the theft.
“The issue is before the courts and we prefer not to comment any further because we don’t want to jeopardize the case before the courts,” she said.
She confirmed Rizvi was a rural mail carrier with Canada Post, but no longer works for the company. She could not provide any details about routes the woman might have covered, but she encouraged anyone with concerns about missing mail to contact the post office.
She said Canada Post takes missing mail like this very seriously and always wants to hear from customers if they believe there is a problem.
It is standard for Canada Post to call in local police when they have to make an arrest, she added.
“We do work very, very closely with the local law enforcement on cases of theft of mail or anything like that,” she said. “Our investigations can only be taken so far and then we turn it over to local police.”
Local police arrested another letter carrier in October 2009 after finding a tonne of mostly junk mail in his apartment after he was evicted.
Schoepp said this does not seem to be a similar case, and there were gift cards and uncashed cheques found in this case.
