Morinville is celebrating the grand opening of its new rec-centre with three days of free admission.

Town council got a report last week on this weekend’s grand opening plans for the Morinville Leisure Centre.

The centre opened its doors May 27 with a relatively low-key ribbon-cutting. At the time, town officials said they would hold a bigger celebration this September.

Said celebration starts Friday at 4 p.m., reported community and protective services director David Schaefer. Guests will have free entry to the facility from Friday to Sunday and will get to try out different sports and activities as part of a passport to fitness challenge. Visitors will get to learn about community events through the Active Living Fair, check out a face-painter and a balloon artist, and enter the Sturgeon Hockey Club 50/50 draw. The grand opening itself will be Saturday, with speeches from dignitaries at 11 a.m., followed by a free barbecue lunch.

Councillors floated the idea of challenging regional leaders to a five-hour relay event in the field house as part of the festivities, but it was unclear as of press time if the challenge would actually occur.

Council heard that the grand opening had been budgeted at $10,000.
