The St. Albert Kinettes already feel like they’re well on their way to having a successful three-week collection campaign to support its annual Christmas hamper project.

The campaign launches this morning at St. Albert Centre but club president Karen Mehok spent part of yesterday bringing in a big bin full of donations from that location, an early show of support that isn’t surprising to her but still puts a smile on her face.

“Things look really good. We haven’t even had the kickoff yet and [the box] has already had to be emptied once.”

The hampers provide an added level of support to local residents struggling with their finances. Mehok expects that there will be more families than last year accessing the program this holiday season.

“I’ve already received 100 referrals this year. Considering it’s not even Dec. 1 yet, that’s actually a little bit higher than what we usually have at this time of the year. Usually we’re at 80. To be 20 over what we usually are, we’re thinking we might surpass the 200 mark this year. It’s hard to say.”

If you would like to donate food or new, unwrapped toys, please find a collection bin at the following locations: St. Albert Centre, St. Albert Place, both Save-On Foods stores, Superstore, both ATB and Scotiabank branches, Royal Bank, the Ron Hodgson car dealership and all three high schools in St. Albert.

Monetary donations by cash or cheque can be dropped off at fire hall No. 3 at 100 Giroux Rd. Cheques may also be mailed to:

Kinette Club of St. Albert

Christmas Hamper Program

P.O. Box 65064, Mission Hill Plaza

St. Albert, AB T8N 5Y3

Collection lasts until Dec. 12 with delivery of hampers to take place on Dec. 15 and 16. Mehok hopes that people will consider volunteering to collect donations and sort the goods into hamper boxes.

“I would rather have more than enough volunteers.”

For more information about the campaign, how to obtain a hamper, or signing up to volunteer, please email [email protected] or contact Mehok at 780-418-3930.
