A new local chapter to support kids interested in sports is finishing up its first major campaign today, and it still needs more public interest.

KidSport St. Albert is asking patrons of the Real Canadian Superstore to give a little and help a lot. That's actually the name of the campaign. Shoppers can give $2 donations at the checkout and all funds will go to pay for registration fees for local children to get into sports programs in.

"This is an opportunity to make a difference to kids who may only get the chance to be spectators because of financial reasons," said Kathleen Range, the committee chair of KidSport St. Albert. Prior to the chapter being set up, there were 50 kids getting support from the provincial KidSport office.

"We're just getting the organization set up and this event is coinciding with that. It was a really good first start for us." She praised the assistance of the Superstore's management for its commitment.

Massive Underwear Affair support

The fourth annual Underwear Affair in Edmonton last weekend was a massive success for the Alberta Cancer Foundation (ACF).

All tolled there were 1,451 people who dropped their pants and brought in about $850,000. That funding will help support research into cancers (like prostate, colo-rectal and ovarian) at the Cross Cancer Institute.

Linda Mickelson, CEO of the Alberta Cancer Foundation, said the funding is well served at that institution.

"The Cross has among the highest participatory rates in clinical trials for cancer centres in Canada."

She also mentioned she doesn't just stand on the sidelines of the event, supporting the runners. She participated by dressing down.

"The things I do for this job, I'll tell you!" she laughed.

St. Albert team Clitar Heros raised the most of any group this year with a total of $33,242 — more than double what the second-place team achieved.
