St. Albert remains under a prolonged heat warning this week, with Environment Canada forecasting daytime highs in the low 30s and little relief overnight.
The federal forecaster says temperatures are expected to reach between 29 C and 33 C each day through Saturday, with overnight lows ranging from 10 C to 16 C. The agency warns the effects of sustained heat can build over time, posing risks of dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
Environment Canada notes vulnerable groups such as seniors, children, outdoor workers and those with pre-existing health conditions face the highest risk during extended hot spells. Residents are urged to drink water regularly, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, and check on neighbours, children and pets.
The City of St. Albert has activated its Vulnerable Population Weather Response, opening cooling spaces at Servus Place, Fountain Park Recreation Centre, St. Albert Place and public libraries. St. Albert Transit is also offering free boarding to anyone seeking relief on buses.
Air quality remains relatively stable, with the Air Quality Health Index sitting at low to moderate risk.
The heat warning is expected to remain in place until early next week, when cooler temperatures in the mid-20s are forecast.
