A young woman was killed Monday night in a horrific crash on Highway 28.

The woman was driving a Mazda SUV with two young children in the backseat on secondary highway 642, crossing Highway 28 when it collided with a southbound Dodge pick-up truck.

The intersection is about 10 kilometres north of Namao on Highway 28.

The children, both young girls, were transported to hospital, one by STARS and another by ground ambulance.

“The two children were in the rear seat of the SUV. One was in a child seat. The other was in a booster seat,” said Morinville RCMP Staff Sgt. Mac Richards.

The force of the impact crushed one side of the SUV. Fire crews had to use extrication tools to free the deceased woman.

The pick-up truck had an elderly man and woman and several children in the backseat, but they received only minor injuries. Richards said they were taken to hospital as a precaution.

“They have gone to be examined, but it would be minor injuries.”

The intersection was littered with pieces from both vehicles, as well as broken glass and fuel from the truck.

Richards said the RCMP had not yet determined the cause of the accident, but encouraged the public to pay close attention at intersections.

“We just ask drivers to be patient, be aware of your surrounding,” he said. “Collisions at intersections are a major factor in deaths here in Alberta.”
