One young man is dead and three other people were taken to hospital following a high-speed crash near Villeneuve yesterday afternoon.

The crash occurred shortly after 3 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 44 and secondary highway 633 just outside the hamlet, located west of St. Albert.

The deceased male victim was one of three people in a black Dodge pickup when it collided at the intersection with a grey Chevrolet Impala.

Cpl. Shawn French with the Morinville RCMP detachment said Tuesday police were not immediately sure if the young man who was killed was the driver of the vehicle.

Officers were still on scene investigating when the Gazette went to press, but preliminary indications suggest the Impala was heading south on Highway 44 before the crash while the pickup was travelling west, crossing Highway 44 on secondary highway 633.

Including the young man who died, there were three people in the pickup and a single driver in the Impala. The condition of the injured was not known at press time.

Emergency crews from Spruce Grove, Morinville, and St. Albert were on the scene and worked for several minutes to free some of the people trapped in the pickup.

The pickup had flipped onto its side and was lying on the west shoulder of Highway 44; a collection of snowboarding equipment littered the ground around it.

The two other people from the pickup and the driver of the Impala were all taken to hospital with serious injuries.
