Cops nab two in pharmacy robbery

Working with police agencies from around the region, St. Albert RCMP have laid charges in last week’s pharmacy robbery.

Working with police agencies from around the region, St. Albert RCMP have laid charges in last week’s pharmacy robbery.

Anthony Morgan Watson, 20, from Sherwood Park and a 15-year-old male who cannot be named have both been charged with one count each of robbery, attempted robbery, and two counts of possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes and two counts of wearing a disguise with intent to commit an offence.

Watson has also been charged with three counts of breaching his bail conditions.

Both are scheduled to appear in St. Albert court next week; Watson appears on Jan. 31 and the youth on Feb. 1. Both were arrested Friday in Sherwood Park without incident.

The St. Albert robbery took place last Wednesday around 7 p.m. when two men entered the Health Select Pharmacy and while wielding a knife demanded the prescription painkiller Oxycontin.

After being told the pharmacy does not stock the medication the men grabbed other drugs from store shelves before fleeing.

The robbery happened only an hour after two men with very similar descriptions attempted to enter the Guardian Drugs in Morinville.

Cpl. Laurel Kading of the St. Albert RCMP said comparing video footage of the two incidents combined with information from a third similar robbery in Camrose last Thursday allowed police to zero in on suspects.

“The pattern was very similar so they started working with Camrose and by comparing the bits of information with all three detachments and Camrose police they were able to put enough together that it fit some people who police knew.”

Kading said the youth has no criminal record, however Watson did have a prior dealing with the police.

She said police were also helped by people coming forward with tips.
