St. Albert's largest indoor public swimming pool is on schedule to re-open this July, the city says.

The pool was initially closed in May of last year for regularly scheduled maintenance work, however, significant damage to the main concrete slab supporting both the leisure and competition pool was identified by the maintenance crew in August, requiring an extended closure and immediate fix.

When it was determined  the pool would be closed longer than planned as a result of the slab damage, the city also decided to work ahead and completed further maintenance work that was initially scheduled for 2024.

“A second phase of aesthetic improvements including tile replacement, interior painting, building envelope improvements and accessibility upgrades were combined with this lifecycle work to avoid an additional facility closure in 2024 which resulted in substantial cost savings,” reads a city news release from April 26.

The city says that leading up to late July, summer swimming lessons will still be offered at Servus Place and Grosvenor Pool before transitioning to Fountain Park at the end of July and continuing throughout August.

“Programs will be available to view online May 3 with early aquatics registration open to St. Albert residents starting on May 10 at 8:00 a.m.,” the release says. “Public registration opens on May 17. ”

“The city recognizes the closure of this well-used facility was difficult and we thank the community, visitors and impacted user groups for their patience as the city undertook this important work.”

According to the news release, the city is also planning a grand re-opening event for Fountain Park Pool, with further details to be announced as construction starts to wrap-up.

“A further update on the specific opening date will be made in mid-June as construction nears completion.”
