Morinville-based Champion Petfoods took home a 2014 Alberta Chambers of Commerce Business Award of Distinction last week. The award in the export category was presented to the company at the chambers’ awards gala on Friday night.
It was the second year in a row that Champion was nominated in the category. The award compliments what the company has been able to achieve and gives its employees a sense of going in the right direction, said president and CEO Frank Burdzy.
“We’ve been in the export marketplace for a long time and it’s nice to get the recognition as an Alberta company that we are contributing to the Alberta economy by being able to export finished goods to a lot of countries around the world,” he said.
The Alberta Chambers of Commerce had announced that Champion was selected as a finalist for the awards on Jan. 30.
This year Champion competed in the export category against three companies from Medicine Hat. Being able to win against businesses from a much larger community is exciting and brings great strength to the community, said Simon Boersma, president of the Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce.
Champion is important to Morinville as the company employs a great number of people from the community, who in return aid the local economy, he said.
“We are very excited that Champion received the award and we are excited that they are in our community,” said Boersma.
In 2013 Champion Petfoods received its first business award from the Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce, taking home the Large Business Award.
