St. Albert may have a new K–9 public school in its northwest by 2028 now that the provincial government has fronted the cash for it.
Alberta Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides announced funding for 14 new school projects in the Edmonton region on March 19.
The funding was part of the province’s proposed 2025 budget. The budget includes funds for a new 900-student K–9 school in St. Albert’s Chérot neighbourhood run by St. Albert Public Schools.
The City of St. Albert has created a school site in Chérot in the city’s northwest. The site was currently designated for a high school.
In a media release, St. Albert Public said the board would now work with the City of St. Albert to change the designation of the Chérot site from a “high school” to a “school.” City council was expected to debate such a change at its April 1 meeting. The school would then have to be designed and built, which the district hoped would happen by 2028. The school’s name and programs would be decided later this year.
The Gazette will have more to come.
