A 15-year-old St. Albert boy died Tuesday evening after being attacked in north Edmonton.
Edmonton homicide detectives are investigating the death, and a man is in custody. The man was arrested shortly after the attack, which happened near 137 Avenue and 184 Street in Edmonton at around 9:30 p.m on Tuesday.
The boy was walking with his mother and his pit bull when the assailant, whom the pair were familiar with, stabbed the boy in the neck, according to the Edmonton Journal.
The mother was walking in front of the boy when he was stabbed, and she told the Journal that she believes the attack was triggered by a mental episode. She said that the pair regularly walked the dog in the area and knew the man in passing.
Police arrived at the scene and found the boy suffering serious, life-threatening injuries according to a Wednesday press release from the Edmonton Police Service.
The boy died on scene after police and paramedics tried to save him.
Based on a Facebook post from St. Albert Public Schools, the Journal identified the boy as Grade 9 Lorne Akins Junior High student Broden Radomske.
“Broden had been a student at Robert Rundle and attended Hillgrove up until his recent move to [Lorne Akins],” the post reads. “Our hearts are with Broden's family, friends, classmates and teachers as they struggle with this enormous loss. Our flags will also be lowered in honour of Broden. We are grateful for the time he spent with us. May he rest in peace.”
An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
