A St. Albert senior has died after being struck by a car while crossing Liberton Drive.

The St. Albert RCMP report that they were called to a collision between a Honda Accord and a pedestrian at the intersection of Liberton Drive and Lennox Drive at about 1:20 p.m. on Sept. 10.

Police say the car had been travelling south on Liberton Drive and had struck the pedestrian, a 75-year-old male resident of St. Albert who had been headed east in the southside crosswalk. The pedestrian was transported to hospital where he later died from his injuries. The driver remained on scene. Police were still investigating the collision.

The Lennox/Liberton intersection features crosswalks on all sides, with the east and west ones featuring flashing pedestrian lights, curb extensions, and fluorescent yellow backgrounds (the latter of which were installed as part of a traffic-safety push in 2015). The north and south crosswalks feature standard white stripes and stop signs.

Tim Cusack, who has lived at the corner of Lennox and Liberton for 22 years but did not witness this incident, said this intersection has been the sight of many serious collisions over the years.

“Those [drivers] going north and south on Liberton, they sometimes blow right though that stop sign,” he noted.

Cusack said the city’s traffic safety improvements to this intersection had reduced its rate of collisions, but there was still room for improvement. He called on the city to add flashing lights to the north/south stop signs to make the more visible.

Anyone with information on this collision should call St. Albert RCMP at 780-458-7700 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
