Break-in suspect who returns to scene arrested

The Morinville RCMP got perhaps their easiest arrest of the year when a suspect in a break-in walked back to the scene of the crime as his face was being replayed on store security.

Officers responded to a commercial alarm at the Mac’s convenience store around 5 a.m. last Thursday. When they arrived they found a large pane glass window had been smashed and someone had wandered in and grabbed several items.

A little while later, while officers were standing in the store playing back the security video from the break-in, a man walked in who bore a striking resemblance to the man they were watching on screen.

The man was wearing identical clothes and had a black ski mask identical to the one the suspect was wearing in the video.

When he walked in, the man asked to buy cigarettes and when he was told the store was closed due to the break-in, he continued to insist.

Sgt. Chris Narbonne with the Morinville detachment, said when the officer turned to the man and then turned back to the video monitor, he could hardly believe his eyes.

He said it didn’t take long for the officer to decide this man was the suspect on the surveillance footage and they arrested him.

“We figured one and one equals two and we arrested him.”

When officers arrested him, they discovered many of the items stolen from the store were in his pocket.

He was taken to the Morinville detachment and released on $500 cash bail.

Iain James Marsh has been charged with two counts of breaking and entering and one count of wearing a disguise with intent to commit a crime. He will make his first court appearance on Thursday at the Morinville courthouse.
