Smaller locations like St. Albert’s Sturgeon Hospital will deliver lower risk procedures.

On Wednesday afternoon, the provincial government announced it would be investing $100 million as part of a strategy to reduce wait times for surgeries across the province.

The plan would expand the capacities of operating rooms in bigger centres, like Calgary and Edmonton, so they would be able to perform more complex surgeries.

Smaller locations like St. Albert’s Sturgeon Hospital will deliver lower-risk procedures.

The move is part of a $500-million investment from the provincial government to reduce wait times.

The funding will go to renovate departments like the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the University of Alberta Hospital, including adding one new operating room.

The government says the money will help add more than 17,000 surgeries this fiscal year. Once the renovations are complete, the government expects 30,000 additional surgeries will be available to Albertans by 2023.
