The St. Albert Road Runners and Triathlon club (STARRT) hosted 180 athletes at the 35th annual St. Albert Sprint Triathlon on Sunday, Aug. 11.
Of the 180 athletes, 50 were competing in a triathlon for the first time, something race director Miles Gibson was amazed to see.
"It's a big deal to do a triathlon," said Gibson. "This (St. Albert triathlon) is a race for people to come out, and not only enjoy, but have fun."
The event was based at Grosvenor Pool, and both the running and biking trials went through the Grandin neighbourhood. Thanks to the 70-plus volunteers, the triathlon ran smoothly and injury free.
"It's all about the location," Gibson said. "Thanks to the contribution of all of our volunteers and executives, who put in hundreds of hours planning and improving this event, is what makes it special."
Gibson described the moment of the triathlon he most enjoys.
"My favourite part is when it's in transition," he said. "That's where the athletes set up their gear and get ready to swim, and because most of my job is done when the race starts, I get to talk to the athletes while they transition to the pool. It's great to talk to everyone, and get feedback on the event."
STARRT is a non-profit organization, and prides itself in going above and beyond for the athletes. This year, thanks to all the sponsors, each athlete got a medal for just competing in the event. Every athlete was also given snacks and food at the end of the race. Gibson acknowledged the importance of the event's sponsors.
"The sponsors we have are a major contributor to the success we have," described Gibson. "They love helping. Community contribution as a whole is the strength of this event. We could not put on the event we do without the support from St. Albert; every year they agree to help, and I am very grateful."
STARRT has already begun planning for next year's St. Albert Triathlon, with hopes of improving the running and biking trails even more.
"We want to rejig the course and make it a safer, and smoother operation" shared Gibson.
