A retired teacher says she’s having a blast as a Catholic trustee and hopes voters will let her stay on the job for another term.
Trustee Lydia Yeomans is running for re-election this fall as a Greater St. Albert Catholic trustee in Ward 1 (St. Albert). She is currently chair of the GSACRD board. First elected in 2021, Yeomans is a St. Albert resident who worked 34 years as a teacher and school administrator.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed serving GSACRD as a trustee,” she said, and she decided, after much thought, she wouldn’t mind another term in the role.
Yeomans said she and the board worked hard last term to build relations with families, teachers, students, and other levels of government, hoping to encourage efficiency and co-operation. The result has been a lot of excitement and enrolment growth — excitement her granddaughter will experience this week as she starts kindergarten.
“It’s very important to me that we offer families who’re looking for a Catholic education a high-achieving, growing school division,” she said.
Yeomans said the board pushed for equity in school site access last term by lobbying to keep the school site in Chérot earmarked for a high school — a site the district will need soon, given burgeoning enrolment at St. Albert Catholic High.
If re-elected, Yeomans said she hoped to continue the growth of the district’s French Immersion campus and get a new school built in northwest St. Albert.
“Education is my passion," she said. "It’s been my whole life and it’s been a real privilege to still be a part of it.”
St. Albert Catholic voters will pick five Ward 1 trustees in this fall’s municipal election. Four people were running for those positions as of Sept. 2. Visit www.gsacrd.ab.ca/trustees/2025-trustee-election-information-for-candidates for the list of candidates.
