A former teacher, principal, and town councillor has jumped into this fall’s race for Greater St. Albert Catholic Schools trustee.

Longtime Legal resident Raymonde Roulston filed to run in this fall’s Greater St. Albert Catholic trustee election on Aug. 22. She is running in Ward 2, which includes Morinville, Legal, and Bon Accord.

Roulston said she decided to run for trustee because she wanted to help ensure publicly funded Catholic education was available to all Albertans.

“I’m running because I feel like I have a lot to offer,” she said, and because she could be a reasonable, experienced voice in the district.

Roulston retired from GSACRD last June as the district’s director of early childhood education and learning support services. She worked for the district for 33 years as a teacher, vice-principal, principal, and division principal in Legal, Morinville, and St. Albert. She served two terms on Legal’s town council in the 2000s and is currently a member of the Fête au Village executive committee. She and her two daughter are all GSACRD graduates.

Roulston said she would bring a grassroots, front-line perspective on the challenges facing today’s schools to the board if elected — challenges such as growing class sizes, new technologies, diverse need students, and mental health.

“Schools are the heart for families,” she said, and she hoped to bring more mental health resources to schools and students if elected.

Roulston said she would advocate for equity for rural residents at the board if elected, adding that the district currently did a good job at balancing rural and urban needs. She would also work to maintain the district’s legacy of educational excellence.

Roulston is a member of the St. Emile Parish and Catholic Women’s League in Legal.

Roulston was one of the three declared candidates running for GSACRD trustee in Ward 2 as of Aug. 26. Ward 2 voters will elect two trustees in this fall’s election. Visit www.gsacrd.ab.ca/trustees/2025-trustee-election-information-for-candidates for more on the candidates.
