LETTER: Why are we so hard on each other?

"Councillor Watkins brings so much more value to our city council with the diverse committees he sits on to dismiss him for a mistake. It’s not like he sits there and curses and swears in every meeting."

Dear Editor,

I’m very dismayed when I read about a few people who are asking for Councillor Ray Watkins' resignation over a mistake.

A mistake that I’m sure we’ve all done at some time. Whether it be a pocket dial, incorrectly hanging up a phone, replying to the wrong text or email, or simply speaking when we shouldn’t have.

I guess the difference is we were fortunate enough that the other person treated us with compassion and understanding for our mistake.

Councillor Watkins brings so much more value to our city council with the diverse committees he sits on to dismiss him for a mistake. It’s not like he sits there and curses and swears in every meeting.

He apologized a few times so let’s get over it and move on.

Why are we so hard on each other? Remember the days when we implemented the three strike rule? Why can’t that be applied here?

With all the uncertainty going on right now, we need to band together and support one another. Not this knee-jerk reaction that we are witnessing.
