Re: "Tips to nurture a healthy brain," March 24 Gazette:

In May, we will recognize 'National Physiotherapy Month'. If there is a story written about this, I would expect that a registered physiotherapist would be interviewed to provide information and recommendations for the general public. Why then, in the recent write-up on National Nutrition Month, was a registered dietitian not interviewed for the same reason? I have nothing against the certified brain health coach interviewed for this article, and she provided fair justification for how diet influences brain health. But there is a good reason why “dietitian” and “nutritionist” are protected titles in Alberta – those who carry these credentials are recognized food and nutrition professionals that are bound by strict standards to ensure the public’s safety.

What is most ironic is that the theme for this year’s Nutrition Month is “Dietitians help you find your healthy”. There are countless dietitians in St. Albert and Edmonton that have all been extensively trained to provide accurate dietary recommendations for various health conditions. We are the most qualified professionals that are specifically trained to help individuals meet their health goals by assessing their diets and tailoring recommendations based on our clients’ personal needs and circumstances. The College of Dietitians of Alberta provides a comprehensive list of contacts and links to help anyone find a dietitian that would best meet their needs. I strongly recommend that for any future nutrition-related articles, local dietitians are sought after and interviewed to ensure that Gazette readers are provided with the most relevant and evidence-based information available.

Anissa Armet, registered dietitian, St. Albert
