LETTER: Follow the science – sometimes

"By rolling addictions services into AHS, those who decide how to spend the health dollars have a dilemma."
letter-sta

On matters of the pandemic, Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has been supportive of following the science. He is listening to the recommendations of Public Health. The back-to-school situation is very confusing, so I am excluding the school situation.

Why is Kenney ignoring the science concerning addiction recovery? Instead, he prefers to use his intuition to guide his policy. That is risky. It is the lives of others that he is risking.

AADAC, a former independent agency in Alberta, had a world-wide reputation for excellence in treatment and prevention. By rolling addictions services into AHS, those who decide how to spend the health dollars have a dilemma. Do I spend my last dollar saving lives in the ER or treat addictions with a person who is not at immediate risk of dying?

It has led to a deterioration in treatment and prevention. The science does not support Kenney. Please, Mr. Premier, get back on track and stop thinking you know better than everybody who disagrees with you.
