‘Are we all turning into a bunch of two year olds?', or ‘We are all in this together until someone else receives a benefit before I do – then, it's every man for himself!’

I couldn’t decide which would be a better headline for this letter.

That's the thought when I heard of the ‘outrage’ of the Social Justice Warriors’ League at news that St. Albert fire chiefs had received a COVID vaccination ahead of other St. Albert rmergency medical services employees.

When this story was ‘leaked’ to the media, courtesy of the firefighter’s union of course, the manic response of the perpetually offended, who were not privy to any guidelines or decisions made in interpreting who in the Fire Department would be eligible to be vaccinated, was loud and clear – feigned outrage, and the demand that ‘heads roll’!

This manic group even appears to include, once again, our esteemed Mayor Cathy Heron (remember her recent outrage when a St. Albert councillor had the nerve to travel to Mexico over the Christmas holidays during the latest COVID lockdown, and subsequent ‘about face’ when an investigation determined that the councillor had broken no law in doing so), with her recent comment on St. Albert Chat on Facebook, that if the allegation was confirmed, the Fire Chief getting a vaccinated was a “... poor decision to get vaccinated ahead of those that are actually providing front line services every day ...”.

The fire chiefs (as well as any City of St. Albert employee) are supposed to enjoy the confidence of the mayor and the rest of city hall until any wrongdoing has been confirmed – if the fire chief has been persuaded to leave prior to any investigation being concluded, I wonder what the ‘buyout’ of the fire chief(s) is going to cost taxpayers?

Almost on a daily basis, another group of people proclaim ‘Me First!’ in getting vaccinated, and how they should be elevated to some special status to be vaccinated before someone else due to their employment status or culture ... just like a bunch of two-year-olds who scream and have a tantrum if they don’t get to be first in line.

Randy Kish, St. Albert
