WIERSEMA, Mary

Posted

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Wiersema (née VanRhyn).  She was born on September 29, 1938, in Waddinxveen, the Netherlands and passed away on January 1, 2025 at the Sturgeon Community Hospital in St. Albert.

Mary will be remembered for the strength of her Christian faith. She was devoted to her husband, family, and friends. Education was important to her, and she completed a Bachelor of Education degree while raising four daughters. This was followed by several years of teaching kindergarten. Mary loved making things. Her creative endeavours included oil painting, baking, woodworking, quilting, and crocheting snowflakes. She will also be remembered for all her volunteer work, including many hours at the Food Bank, the library, and the local elementary school. She also contributed to an adult literacy program, the Friendship Club, and spent decades teaching Sunday School.

Mary is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Edward; her children: MJ (David), Charlotte, Annette (Cyril), and Aby (Dan); her grandchildren: Chris (Allison), Matthew (Ellen), Janeal (Chris), Jordan (Caitlyn), Amanda, Justine (Keenan), Candice, Mitchell (Rachel), and Danielle (Casey); and her great-grandchildren: Michael, Emily, and Avery. She will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 20, 2025, at the Christian Reformed Church of St. Albert, 12 Gate Avenue.
