On Friday, December 30, 2022 Fred James Riley Stiles, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away at the age of 94 years. Fred was predeceased by his loving wife Sylvia in 2012, after 55 years of marriage. Fred will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Carla Nelson and son James. Fred will also be fondly remembered by his five grandchildren Chase, Riley, & Evan Nelson, Hayley and Brandon Stiles, his great-grandchild Chance, and his numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends. Fred was predeceased by his daughter Andrea in 1981, and all of his siblings, sisters Mildred Trueman, Helen O’Blenis, Marjorie Matthews, Bernice Steeves and Lillian Morton, along with brothers Bob and Esmond Stiles.

Fred was born in New Brunswick in 1928 and joined the RCMP in 1947. Staff Sgt. Stiles was a proud retired member of the RCMP who provided dedicated service to the public for 30 years. He served in many provinces, enjoying the diversity and varied experiences in each community. Fred’s lifelong passion was anchored in the Canadian North; he is best known for opening up the RCMP detachment and spending 3 years at Alexandra Fiord, Ellesmere Island from 1953 to 1956 and returned to the north several times after that. He was a true outdoorsman and adventurer, which he passed down to his children and grandchildren.

Fred and Sylvia enjoyed visiting their children and families in Western Canada and the North, along with time at their cottage on Upper Mann Lake, Alberta and spending their winters in retirement in Apache Junction, Arizona where they made long lasting friendships.

Fred lived his remaining months of life at the Kipnes Centre for Veterans, receiving excellent care from the compassionate staff.

A Celebration of Fred’s life will be held at a later date when family and friends are able to gather. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kipnes Centre for Veterans, 4470 McCrae Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta T5E 6M8.
