Hamish Bower Rankin died peacefully on June 12, 2025, in Edmonton, Alberta, at the age of 95. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Esther, and remembered fondly by sons David (Catherine) and Bruce (Ingrid), and grandchildren Luke (Émilie), Mark, and Mary, sister Barbara, and many extended family members.
Hamish was born in Dunedin, New Zealand on September 29, 1929 and grew up at Battery Hill in Queenstown. As a young man his wanderlust for life, traveling, and the outdoors took him from New Zealand through Europe and eventually to the Canadian arctic where he married and started a family. Following several years again living in New Zealand, he returned to Canada and eventually settled in St. Albert, Alberta. He enjoyed sharing with his family and many friends his great love of the outdoors through skiing, hiking, camping, canoeing, and traveling.
Thank you to the doctors, nurses, and all the staff at the geriatric rehabilitation ward of the Glenrose Hospital for their compassionate, respectful, and thoughtful care and support during his final days.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on July 10th at the Anglican Parish of Christ Church, 12116-102 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta. The service will also be streamed online.
