On February 17, 2025, Shirley Murphy (nee Cowan), of Edmonton and, in later years, St. Albert, Alberta, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 years surrounded by family at Foyer Lacombe Hospice in St. Albert.

She was predeceased by her life-long partner and husband, Terry Murphy, her parents, Doris and Jack Cowan, her sisters, Bonny Martens and Carol McClary, special cousin, Don Davies, nephew Jack Martens and brother-in-law, Larry McIlvride.

Shirley is lovingly remembered and will be forever missed by her children, Sandy Clark (Glenn Graae) and Bob (Ezaura) Murphy, her grandchildren, Shaun Cowan (Amy), David Cowan (Kimberly), Matthew Cowan (Charlotte), Leah Guy (Colton) and Brian Murphy, her great grandchildren, Claire, Adelyn, Jack, Will, Leo, Nolan, Karver, Bentley and Oaklen; her sister, Joan McIlvride and many nieces, nephews and so many special friends.

The family is sincerely grateful and extends a huge thank you to the wonderful staff at River Ridge Memory Lane, the staff at the Sturgeon Community Hospital and Unit 19 and her last stop with the compassionate, caring staff at Foyer Lacombe Hospice who provided Mom and each of us with the most incredible comfort and care during her time with them. It was heartwarming to see many of Mom’s care aids from River Ridge come into her room at Foyer Lacombe to check on her and to say goodbye.  She had such a huge indelible impact on everyone that she touched.

A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 14, 2025 at Evergreen Funeral Home, 16204 Fort Road, Edmonton, Alberta.

Memorial donations may be made to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, Edmonton, Alberta, a cause dear to Shirley’s heart as she gave over 35 years of volunteer hours to patients fighting cancer at the Cross Cancer Institute, the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories or to Foyer Lacombe Hospice.
