We regretfully announce the peaceful passing of Velano T. Currey of St. Albert, AB on May 12, 2023.

Velano was a woman of immense character, sharing kindness, curiosity, motivation, hope to many who crossed her path. One of the most courageous women to ever walk this earth.  Always on a mission to complete a project or assist someone in need.

Her life began in small island of Trinidad and Tobago on Feb. 2, 1930, continuing in England and Canada.  Her passion for helping people lead her the field of nursing becoming a State Registered Midwife. Her nursing career continued in Edmonton, AB working various locations across the region.

Velano was predeceased by her husband, Hareson Chown, her brothers Arthur Yearwood and Donald Yearwood, and her sister Cynthia Yearwood.  Velano is survived by her daughter Shoela Currey and son-in-law Mark Detsios, her sister-in-law Dorothy Yearwood, her niece Melissa Ingraham-Bassa. Her legacy surpasses bloodlines.

In line with Velano’s wishes a Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday May 30, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Albert Catholic Church, 7 St. Vital Ave., St. Albert, AB.

In place of flowers, please donate to a charity of your choice.  We will never be able to fill the space she has left behind.
