Browne, Dorothy Photo

1926 – 2022

Dorothy Browne of St. Albert, passed away peacefully on July 22, 2022 surrounded by loving family.

Dorothy was predeceased by her devoted husband Derek and many family and friends. She is survived by her brother Bill (Johanne) Dryden, and her children Vicki Anderson, Ken (Donna) Browne, Virginia (Bill) Fleming, Bev Milne, and Scott (Marion) Browne; grandchildren: Bennett and Meredith (Hans), Jessica (RJ) and Nolan, Alexa (Jenn), Cameron, and Billie (Ashleigh), Matthew (Elaine) and Annie, Jared and Carly, Samantha (Sean), Jensen, and Joel; and 5 great-grandchildren.

Born in McLennan Alberta, Dorothy was the third of seven children. She grew up in Edmonton and met Derek in 1949 where he had established a grocery business upon his return from WWII. They married in 1950 and raised their family in St. Albert. With five young children, Dorothy pursued her Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Alberta. One of only three women in her graduating class of 1966, Dorothy finished near the top of her class, an accomplishment her husband and family were very proud of. She went on to a successful career with the Government of Alberta as a Systems Analyst. Dorothy and Derek retired to Victoria in 1988 where they made new friendships and enjoyed a variety of activities.

Anything Dorothy turned her hand to she excelled at. Being an avid gardener, excellent seamstress and baker extraordinaire were just some of her many talents. Even in retirement, she took up tap dancing and became a member of a community performance group. A gifted musician Dorothy was frequently called upon by family, friends and groups to play the piano or organ. She loved being a grandma and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave her immense joy.

Dorothy immediately won people over with her gorgeous smile and developed many wonderful relationships throughout her life. She was affiliated with several groups including Beta Sigma Phi, Order of the Eastern Star, Ex-POW Association, Saanich Newcomers Assn and the Monterey Seniors Assn.

Dorothy’s final few years were happily spent at Foyer Lacombe in St. Albert and her family is most appreciative and thankful for the loving care and attention lavished on her by her Foyer family.

Always positive and cheerful, Dorothy was an inspiration to us all and will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed.

Cremation will take place and a private family celebration will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of  Dorothy to Covenant Foundation (Attention Foyer Lacombe), 1 St. Vital Avenue, St. Albert T8N 1K1 or a charity of your choice.
