NIXON, Arthur William

December 27, 1931 - February 28, 2019

Arthur William Nixon, of St. Albert, Alberta, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2019 at 87 years of age with family by his side.

Arthur was born in Nelson, British Columbia. He met his future wife, Anita, while in high school and they married in Trail, British Columbia on February 27, 1954.

Apprenticing and serving as a machinist for nine years at Cominco’s Sullivan Mine in Kimberley, Arthur continued his pursuit of higher education with night school classes and studied engineering at the University of British Columbia.  In 1962, Arthur moved his young family to join the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton as an instructor, retiring from there as Vice President in 1988, after 26 years of service. During that same time period, Arthur also completed a Masters in Education at the University of Alberta and served as a Special Projects Officer in Advanced Education and Manpower.

Following his retirement, Arthur remained in the St. Albert area and directed his efforts towards volunteer work supporting the St. Albert Cosmopolitan Club and the RCMP Victim Service’s Unit with his time.  Arthur also enjoyed traveling, fishing, construction of small projects and, his greatest passion, time with his family. His pride in his family was exceeded only by his family’s pride in him.  Words put to print cannot begin to convey how great he was as a husband, father, grandfather (Nono), friend, mentor and co-worker; nor can they accurately describe all that he meant to those lucky enough to be part of his family or even just to have known him.

Arthur is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Anita; his children: Chris, Brian, Todd (Arlene) and Russell (Jocelyn); grandchildren: Matthew (Stephanie), Mickaela and Tony; sister Florence; brothers-in-law, Jack Harvey and Hugo Smecher, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, William and Florence and his sister, Marion.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Connelly-McKinley St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Drive, St. Albert, Alberta on Saturday, March 16th, 2019 at 2:00 p.m.  The family wishes to thank the team at Citadel Care Centre for their compassionate care and support.

As an expression of sympathy and if so desired, Memorial Donations may be made to the Parkinson Association of Alberta, #102, 5636 Burbank Crescent S.E., Calgary, Alberta T2H 1Z6.
