St. Albert RCMP Const. David Wynn will be remembered next week during a hockey game slated to raise funds for a memorial and endowment fund.
On Thursday Oct. 20 the 840 CFWC Critters will take to the ice at the Go Auto Arena against a team made up of St. Albert minor hockey coaches.
“We have a responsibility as a society to help remember those who help protect us,” Mayor Nolan Crouse said.
The lineup will include two of Wynn’s sons. One will be playing in the game and the other will be behind the bench coaching the game.
“He was a family member, a father, a coach, a D.A.R.E. instructor in schools, an RCMP family member,” Crouse said. “He was your grassroots person who was modestly really helping build the community. He did those things that were grassroots, family oriented, serving the community through grounded stuff.”
In June, it was announced that a memorial for Wynn would be set up at Lacombe Park, where he enjoyed spending time with his family. It will include benches around a large rock, decorated with plaques to remember Wynn and the values he stood for.
An endowment fund was also created to award scholarships in Wynn’s name to youth hoping to pursue careers in public service, including military, police and emergency services.
The city of St. Albert put forward $100,000 to support Wynn’s legacy and many other donations have come in from the community. The funds from the hockey game on Thursday will help contribute to the fundraising. The funds will be managed in the long term by the St. Albert Community Foundation.
Const. Wynn was killed while investigating a vehicle theft on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015. After a routine licence plate check the 42-year-old was critically injured in a confrontation at the Apex Casino in St. Albert.
Wynn was shot in the head by Shawn Maxwell Rehn, who fired at the officer and his partner Auxiliary Const. Derek Bond at close range. The incident began when Wynn and Bond identified a licence plate that didn’t match the registration.
Rehn’s body was found later at a residence, dead from a suicide.
The hockey game will include a silent auction and a chuck-a-duck. Admission will be by donation.
