“I’m bored!”
With stomachs full of leftover turkey and the sheen wearing off some of the fancy new gifts that Santa delivered, there are many in this community settling in to the idea that there’s still nearly two weeks until we get back into regular schedules.
The City of St. Albert is reminding residents that there are plenty of options for getting out of the house and getting active over the holiday season to help fill those long days until school starts up again January 9.
“We have this beautiful natural environment, and we also have all these amenities residents can take advantage of,” recreation marketing manager Shelley Sawchuk said. “It’s a good opportunity to get out and embrace winter, embrace the holiday, get outside and just get active.”
The obvious choice at this time of year, she said, is to get out to enjoy the city’s many ice surfaces. Outdoor surfaces are free to use all across the city, and there are several free skating events at indoor surfaces over the next two weeks and for the rest of the season.
She also pointed to the many drop-in class offerings at Servus Place, ranging from kid-friendly programs to ones more geared toward adults – for example, a fusion yoga course offered today (Dec. 28) called “Peace and Presence.”
“It’s a great thing to do after everyone’s had their gi-normous holiday meals, to get everything flowing in the body,” Sawchuk said.
Other courses on offer will extend through the winter season until March, like nature education and cooking courses for kids of all ages.
Perhaps more significant in this city is the wealth of outdoor amenities on offer, including the Red Willow Trail system through the Sturgeon River Valley, the Riverlot 56 Natural Area, the cross-country skiing at the Kingswood Day Use Area, and the perennial classic, tobogganing down Seven Hills.
“Take advantage of the beauty of the city, and the beauty of the holiday,” Sawchuk said.
