The RCMP is looking for help after vandals targeted St. Albert Catholic High School sometime over the Easter weekend.

The school was covered in graffiti, most likely late Saturday night or early Sunday morning, according to Const. Janice Schoepp.

The St. Albert detachment was called early Sunday after the school’s principal came across the vandalism and is now looking for residents who might have seen anything or anyone around the school.

“It was reported on Easter Sunday and we are looking for anyone who might have seen something the evening before.”

The graffiti, which featured homophobic slurs and the number nine, covered both the front and rear entrances to the school as well as several garage doors. It also completely covered several small buses the school uses to transport students on trips.

The school is located on Malmo Avenue in the Mission neighbourhood.

Schoepp said graffiti certainly happens elsewhere in the community, but it is rare to see so much graffiti in one incident or one place.

“This is on a large scale and it is a school, so it is a bit more concerning.”

Deb Schlag, the school board’s secretary-treasurer, said Tuesday that crews were on the job right away to try and clean up the graffiti, but there was still more work to do to completely clean the school.

“They have cleaned most of it off, but they will have to come back tomorrow with painters to finish up.”

The school has been closed for more than a week for spring break and classes were set to resume today.

Len Therres, acting operation manager for the school board said the cost of the cleanup would probably cost the division about $2,000, but he didn’t have any firm numbers as of yet.

Anyone with any information is being asked to call the St. Albert RCMP at 780-458-7700 or if they wish to remain anonymous they can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
