In response to EPCOR issuing a mandatory ban on non-essential water use for residents and businesses in the Edmonton region due to an equipment failure, the City of St. Albert has enacted its water demand management measures.

“In accordance with our regional water supply agreement, the City of St. Albert is entering a Water Demand Management Condition effective immediately,” reads a news release published by the city just after 3:00 p.m..

“This means there is a mandatory water restriction for residents, businesses and community organizations, and a mandatory ban on non-essential potable water use for all municipal operations. This is expected to last until EPCOR can complete repairs and restore normal operations at the E.L. Smith Water Treatment Plant.”

As well, the city's response protocol means that city staff have stopped using water for things like pool filling; outdoor rink flooding; and washing city vehicles.

“The City continues to closely monitor the situation and will provide updates if demand conditions change,” the release states, adding that residents can conserve water by not doing laundry or running dishwashers.
