Investigators are currently working to determine the cause of a fire in northern St. Albert that sent six people to hospital on the morning of March 21.
Crews from all three St. Albert fire stations responded to a structure fire around 4:30 on the morning of March 21, according to a post on the St. Albert Firefighters Facebook page. No mutual aid was required.
The structure fire originated in the garage at 24 Norfolk Close. In an email, St. Albert Fire Chief Everett Cooke said it was limited in size and confined to the garage, but generated a great amount of smoke in the home and neighbourhood.
"Six people were in the home at the time of the fire and all were transported to hospital. Two remain there and are receiving care," Cooke said.
St. Albert Fire Services would like to remind residents to consider potential fire hazards in their own homes and work to ensure they minimize the risk of fire by maintaining their properties and staying fire safe:
- Ensure outdoor barbeques are positioned away from homes and other structures.
- Keep homes clutter free and ensure exits and escape routes are free from obstacles and obstructions.
- Keep chimneys and appliances clean and well maintained.
- Winterize your RV.
- Ensure smoke detectors are in good working order and replaced when necessary.
