Two men are dead after a pair of related crashes on a foggy highway near Morinville.
The first accident happened at about 7:30 a.m. on Sunday when a semi collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of Highway 44 and Highway 642 west of Morinville.
Morinville RCMP say the semi truck was travelling north when it collided with the westbound pickup, which burst into flames.
The driver of the pickup was pronounced dead on scene. His identity has not been released and is subject to further investigation, RCMP said.
The driver of the semi truck was not injured.
Second fatality
The second collision occurred less than two hours later just north of the first accident as efforts were underway to control traffic.
A 50-year-old employee of Carillion Canada Inc., who had been called in to control traffic north of the intersection, was struck by a southbound vehicle.
An ambulance that had been deployed for the first accident promptly transported the victim to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police indicate both accidents occurred during foggy conditions.
The second accident is under investigation by the RCMP and Occupational Health and Safety.
The name of the second victim has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
