Two young women were injured last week when a train struck their car just outside Cardiff.

The two women, both in their teens, were driving on Range Road 250 near Township Road 554 when the train hit their Pontiac Sunfire.

The collision happened at around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday as the car was crossing the tracks.

Morinville RCMP Staff Sgt. Mac Richards said the intersection with the rail line is controlled with both a stop sign and a crossing marker.

"There are no lights, no arm. It has the X-sign and a stop sign."

Both of the young women were expected to recover from their injuries. STARS airlifted the driver to an Edmonton hospital while the passenger was treated on scene and released.

RCMP members, local firefighters and paramedics as well as CN police were all on scene at the accident.

Richards said the train was not moving at full speed when it hit the vehicle and the driver's injuries, though serious, were not life threatening.

RCMP officers are still investigating the cause of the collision, Richards said visibility was good at the time and they don't believe the weather or road conditions played a role.

Second collision

STARS was called out to the area again on Monday night. Few details were available as of press time but the collision involved a motorcycle rider who lost control of his bike and crashed.

The man was driving on secondary highway 633 and Range Road 263. The accident was called in around 6:50 p.m. The driver was seriously injured, but Richards said he was expected to survive.
