St. Albertans can expect a "chilling change in the weather" come Tuesday, according to a special weather statement for the St. Albert area from Environment Canada.

The federal organization said Sunday a low pressure system is developing in the Yukon and Northwest Territories. Behind that, an intense cold front will drop southward through northern Alberta Monday and through southern Alberta by Tuesday morning.

"The gusty northerly winds behind the cold front will bring a twenty degree drop in temperatures with Tuesday highs below zero throughout the province," the statement read.

Mixed precipitation will accompany the front, starting with rain and changing to snow especially in southwestern Alberta. Environment Canada forecasts five to 10 centimetres, with up to 20 centimetres in the foothills.
