A couple wants to warn the community after their truck was stolen from the local Kal Tire.

About two weeks ago, Terry Zahorodney dropped off his keys in the overnight key drop of the Kal Tire but by the time staff arrived at work the next morning the truck was gone.

Zahorodney called Kal Tire around 8 a.m. to find out how the repairs on his truck were going, but the staff hadn’t seen his truck. After watching the overnight security footage they discovered that the keys had been taken out of the drop box and his truck was stolen.

“I just basically wanted to let our community know. I feel safe here but lately I’m not so sure anymore. I’m losing my faith,” Carrie Zahorodney said.

In the early hours of Tuesday morning, three thieves drove up to the Kal Tire and started checking out the vehicles parked there. After casing out the vehicles, the thieves left and came back with what Carrie Zahorodney said looked like a 10-foot-pole with a magnet on the end. The thieves then stuck it in the key drop box.

The thieves fished around for a while and made several attempts to get the keys with the magnetic pole. After their unsuccessful attempts they came back with what Carrie said looked like a cell phone charger with a magnet attached to the end.

Eventually the thieves were able to retrieve the Zahorodneys’ keys and stole the truck.

The next week the Zahorodneys’ got a call from RCMP in British Columbia informing them that their truck was found in the small community of Edgewater. Their truck had been found in such bad condition that the Zahorodneys’ didn’t recognize their truck in photos.

It is suspected that the thieves responsible for taking the Zahorodneys’ truck were also responsible for other vehicle thefts in B.C.

The thieves were involved in a dangerous driving incident near Skookumchuk B.C. on May 30. The RCMP received a report of dangerous driving where the driver of a stolen black truck attempted to run over a pedestrian.

The two thieves tried to evade arrest by after ramming two separate police vehicles and fleeing. Two police officers were injured during the collisions.

The male and female involved in the incidents were arrested for multiple offences including weapons, flight from police, dangerous driving, and possession of property obtained by crime.
