The RCMP has warned against travel between Edmonton and Calgary.
“Extreme” weather conditions including high winds and blowing snow causing white-out conditions led to the decision, according to a news release.
“Due to deteriorating weather conditions tow operations will be on hold” between Edmonton and Blackfalds.
Environment Canada’s blowing snow advisory was updated at 8:51 p.m.
“Winds gusting up to 70 km/h are also causing drifting snow which is adding to poor driving conditions,” it reads. “Winds will gradually diminish overnight which will allow conditions to improve.
Between five and 10 cm of snow is possible under narrow bands of moderate snowfall that will persist across central Alberta through to Wednesday morning.
“Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero.”
