It's the final weekend of 2023!

     1. New Year's Eve fireworks

The City of St. Albert's annual New Year's Eve fireworks display will take place at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 31.

The fireworks are taking place in the Meadowview Ball Diamonds, however, for safety reasons, the immediate area will be closed to the public. Event attendees are encouraged to take in the display in Lions Park, Millennium Park, near the Children's Bridge, and in general the green, or brown, space just north of St. Albert Place along the Sturgeon River.

“The dazzling plumes of light and kaleidoscope of colours cascading across the night sky are close to 20 minutes in length,” the Gazette's arts and entertainment reporter Anna Borowiecki recently wrote about the event.

“Street parking will not be available on Mission Avenue for this event and attendees are encouraged to check with St. Albert Transit for the New Year’s Eve schedule.”

     2. Sparrow Blue to play Crown and Tower

Hometown rockers Sparrow Blue are set to take the stage at Crown and Tower on New Year's Eve.

The five-piece band has played with the likes of The Sheepdogs, Default, Finger Eleven, and more, and cite their own influences as Lynyrd Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin.

The $20 cover charge will take effect at 8:00 p.m., and tickets can be purchased at the bar prior to Sunday, or the charge can be added to tabs.

     3. Skating

Despite the Edmonton region's mild winter, most of St. Albert's outdoor public skating rinks are now open for the season.

While young hockey and ringette players will likely dominate the boarded outdoor rinks, those looking for an easy going afternoon of skating can head to Lions Park downtown to skate on the social surface and freezeway, as well as social skating surfaces in select neighbourhoods.

An up-to-date list of which rinks and surfaces are open can be found on the city's website.
