Giving isn’t just a basic act of kindness anymore, but thanks to the effort of Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation it’s now a day - in fact, a whole month.
On March 21 the foundation will host its first annual Community Day of Giving.
The foundation, which has been a pillar of St. Albert, Sturgeon County, and North Edmonton since 1970, is hosting the unique event throughout the entire month of March. This decision was made as a way of having everyone come together for the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation, and giving them a chance to contribute.
“There are so many great nonprofits, we want to make something for our community,” said fund development manager Taryn Moorhouse.
The Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation is composed of four main pillars; enhancing patient care, funding for new medical equipment, supporting innovation, and investing in staff.
The foundation recently purchased an Intermittent Hemodialysis (IHD) machine for the hospital. It also contributed a sim centre, which allows for healthcare professionals, and students to practice clinical skills in a controlled environment.
“It’s very important to show that we are always there for the community, and that we're more than an emergency clinic,” said Moorhouse.
“Eventually we all need the hospital, and this allows the community to show up for each other, and allows us to continue to provide care.”
For those who want to support, you can donate at the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation's website. There, you can also start your own Facebook fundraiser, which allows for a unique way for anyone to raise money for the foundation.
Several local businesses are participating with their own fundraising events for the Foundation, including Save On Foods, Jack's Burger Shack, East Side Mario's Wild Roots Bistro, Boston Pizza and more.
“We want to make it easy for people to be involved,” said Moorhouse.
For anyone who is unable to help contribute to the Community Day of Giving, the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation has a golf tournament that takes place this coming August, and its annual gala in January 2026.
You can also donate anytime of year on the Sturgeon Community Hospital Foundation’s website.
“It’s about supporting the community,” said Moorhouse.
